“With every ending is a new beginning,” the post began. “Rumors have been swirling around & I am here to confirm them. This post serves as our farewell.”
The Whitebrier is now officially owned by the Philadelphia Union League, a move the former owners called “an incredible opportunity for them & the people of Avalon.” The PUL's website says it was voted the top city club in the country seven times since 2012.
The PUL's website says: "Founded in 1862 as a patriotic society to support the Union and the policies of President Abraham Lincoln, The Union League of Philadelphia laid the philosophical foundation of other Union Leagues across a nation torn by civil war.
"The League has hosted U.S. presidents, heads of state, industrialists, entertainers and dignitaries from around the globe and has proudly supported the American military in each conflict since the Civil War. The Union League continues to be driven by its founding motto, Amor Patriae Ducit or Love of Country Leads."
According to the Whitebrier’s website, the venue isn’t just a restaurant—it’s an institution. With three distinct venues under one roof and one of the largest outdoor dining spaces at the Jersey Shore, it has been a go-to for Avalon’s summer crowd for years.
The Motorboat Club Restaurant is known for its 20 rotating beers on tap and classic seashore fare, drawing hungry crowds all season long, the website states.
The Octopus Garden brought Avalon’s nightlife to the next level, offering sushi, specialty cocktails, and an unforgettable outdoor dining experience under the stars, according to the Whitebrier website.
And then there was the Mermaid Cafe, which played host to some of the island’s wildest weekends, best happy hours, and late-night dance parties.
Whitebrier wrapped up its farewell with a sentimental message: “We hope we have provided you with a place that created memories to last a lifetime." The annual Shop-A-Holics event will still be held March 6 to 8.
